A veteran New York police officer was killed in a multi-vehicle crash Thursday.
The incident happened at about 4 p.m. as Yonkers Police Sgt. Frank Gualdino, 53, was on duty and driving an unmarked car near the Sprain Brook Parkway overpass, WCBS-TV reports. The driver of a BMW lost control, crossing into opposite lanes and colliding with the sergeant and a bus.
Gualdino, a 24-year veteran of the department, was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The BMW driver also was hospitalized in critical condition. The bus driver, along with the roughly 30 passengers, is expected to recover.
"We're all feeling the loss today," said Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano. "Police officers are feeling the loss, and the community is. Our condolences go out to the family of this officer. It goes out to the Yonkers family of the young man who was also part of this accident, in critical condition as well. It's a real tragic night all around."
